Abstract
The Directorate for Cultural Heritage commissioned NIKU to investigate how suitable methyl cellulose and other cellulose ethers are in the consolidation of distemper paint on wood. The investigation included literature search, personal correspondence with conservators in Norway and abroad, as well as practical consolidation tests on paint outs and original surfaces. Methyl cellulose is still considered suitable as consolidation material for distemper paint.
